Today I wanted to take a different approach to this blog post and make it more personal by talking about things I like to do at home as well as things I do in my community.
One of the mottos that I live by is even if you’re someone who is disabled, you can do anything you want with a few adaptations. With this saying in mind, I always feel free to be the best version of myself.
There are many different things that I like doing at home and in my community on a day-to-day basis. For example, going for a sail with the Able Sail program in Lake Ontario, going to the Bust A Move dance studio in the east end of the city, or volunteering at Let’s Grow, a day program for adults with disabilities, Bust A Move Dance, also known as BAMD, is an organization running dance classes for kids, teens and adults with disabilities. The teachers create safe, inclusive and accessible dance spaces for everyone! I’ve taken part in this organization for the past two years and am continuing because I like it that much!
On the other hand, some things I like doing at home include playing card games like Uno, watching Blue Jays games, watching Below Deck and going out with my parents or support workers to go grocery shopping or just to explore what my community has to offer. Below Deck is a show that follows the lives and personal drama that happens when a young crew works on luxury superyachts. My Dad and I watch it together every Monday, as it is one of our favorite shows!
I hope this blog post gave you a better idea of who I am, what I like to do and gave you a quick snapshot into what being disabled can look like for someone like me. Hopefully it inspires you to get out in your community to try something new that you’ve never done before!
Happy Fall everyone!
